3rd Bakewell tennis tournament launched

tennis-back-top8On Friday the third edition of Guyana’s premier junior tennis tournament, the Bakewell Tennis Tournament was officially launched and the representatives from the Guyana Lawn Tennis Association and Bakewell promised it will be an exciting tournament.

This prestigious tournament will be used to select a team to represent Guyana at the Tennis Inter Guiana Games (IGG) which will run from October 26 to November 1 in French Guiana.

The tournament is held in honour of the late Chief Executive Officer of Bakewell, Naeem Nasir and it will coincide with his death anniversary.

The competition will be held at the President’s College tennis courts for the next two weekends before returning to the National Racquet Centre for the finals.

The former CEO, Nasir was a dedicated fan and supporter of sport, specifically tennis. Bakewell is carrying on his legacy and continuing to support the development of the sport.

Speaking at the launch, Amanzar of Bakewell said the entity is excited to be part of tennis for the third time, contributing to the development of children.

Former President of GTA and committee member Grace McCalman thanked the management of Bakewell for fulfilling its social responsibility towards development through tennis…late CEO Nasir supported tennis for many years and built a tennis court at President College. She further informed that Tennis programme for the college and nearby primary schools are to be established in the coming year.

Shelly Ramdyhan the tournament coordinator said 39 players have registered and she has so far urged them to exhibit high level of discipline and honesty when playing, scoring or otherwise.

The tournament will feature games in three categories the Under-12 Under-14 and Under-18

The tournament is the last one before the tennis IGG games and will form part of the evaluation for selection for the tennis team.

Meanwhile, the GTA is grateful that Bakewell has upheld their commitment to come on board as a long term sponsor stating that this is what the sport needs. This tournament will help to determine which players are selected for the upcoming overseas tournament.

Some of last year’s top competitors including last year’s girls under 18 winner Afruica Gentle and runner up Aretta Dey, Boy’s under-14 winner Mark McDonald and runner up Heimraj Resaul and Girls’ under 12 winner Sarah Klauky and runner up Nathalie Ramdyhan among many other fierce competitors like Nicola Ramdyhan, Jordan Beaton and Keenan Persaud will compete in this tournament.
