Art Show on the Indian Guyanese aesthetic set for March 28@ National Library

To commemorate the centenary of the abolition of the Indian indentureship programme, the Arts Forum and Guyana Indian Indentureship Abolition Association (GIIAA) will host an exhibition of the work of several Indian Guyanese artists at the National Library, Georgetown, commencing on Tuesday, March 28, and will culminate on Saturday, April 1.
The exhibition which is titled “Ganga Ship 1917: The Long Journey”, will see exhibits from participants including nationally and regionally acclaimed artist Bernadette Persaud along with well-known national artists Philbert Gajadhar and Michael Khan.
Another recognised artist, Betsy Karim, will present among other pieces, installation costumes that pay tribute to the Hindu gods Ganesha, Shiva and Durga.
These will be presented by models at the formal opening on March 28 at 17:00h. Emerging artist Darshani Kistama will also be showcasing fabric art in a Rajput sari along with more traditional canvas pieces done in acrylic and water colour.
Two other newcomers – Brian Tamkund and Ramroop Mahase – will be exhibiting some of their pieces for the first time in a national art exhibition. Petamber Persaud will also showcase a display of books written by and about Indian Guyanese.
The exhibition is open to the public free of charge. Schools that wish to bring study groups to the exhibition can call 220-3337 to make arrangements.
Meanwhile, the exhibition will continue at the National Art Gallery, Castellani House, from April 11 until May 6.
