Bandits storm GPL’s Parika office

Three armed bandits stormed the Guyana Power and Light’s (GPL’s) Customer Service Centre at Parika, East Bank Essequibo on Friday at about noon, robbing staffers of the day’s proceeds and making off with the security guard’s weapon.

The bandits were able to get their hands on all revenues received up until that time, as they held both staff and customers at gun point. They then disarmed the security guard on duty before making good their escape.

The matter has since been reported to the police, and investigations are ongoing.

This recent robbery comes on the heels of last week’s foiled attempt at the power company’s Customer Service Centre at Mon Repos, East Coast Demerara. Swift response by police last Thursday resulted in three bandits fleeing the scene, leaving behind the belongings of customers that they had forcibly taken moments before.

GPL has since said it is immensely concerned about these incidents, and that a robust assessment of security provisions at its locations nationwide is underway.

The company has meanwhile announced temporary service interruptions at two of its Customer Service Centres: The Grove, East Bank Demerara branch will be closed from today until Tuesday coming; and the Parika location will be closed from Sunday until business resumes on Monday.
