Bauxite centennial observances to commence this weekend in Linden

The Linden community will soon host the “Centennial of Bauxite” observances as coined by the Bauxite Century Board to commemorate hundred years of bauxite mining in Guyana.

The Board, headed by Horace James, has planned a range of activities, which commences on October 22 with a grand church service in Linden. According to information from the Bauxite Century Board, the hosting of the Schools’ Debating and Quiz competition finals are slated to be held on October 25.

On October 26, a Symposium and the launching of the Centennial Magazine are slated to take place at the Linmine Constabulary Hall, Mackenzie. At the Symposium, stakeholders will examine the future of bauxite and beyond, while the magazine is expected to chronicle the history of bauxite over the past century. October 27 will see the unveiling of four Centennial Stamps by the Guyana Post Office Corporation at Three Friends Mines, Coomacka, while a Bauxite Centennial dinner is slated for October 28 at the Watooka Complex, Mackenzie.

The unveiling of an arch to mark the Centennial of Bauxite and Guyana’s 50th Independence Anniversary will take place on November 21, on location at Casaurina Drive junction, Mackenzie. The opening of the Centennial Park adjacent to the arch’s location is also slated for November 21.
