Beaton earns BPL stint with Dhaka Dynamites

The popular phrase “all good things come to those who wait” seems to be embodied in the life of Guyanese fast bowler Ronsford Beaton as on Thursday he was given the confirmation that he will be joining West Indian players Dwayne Bravo, Andre Russell and Evin Lewis in the Dhaka Dynamites Franchise in the current Bangladesh Premier League (BPL).

Despite not being selected by Cricket Guyana Inc for the Guyana Jaguars squad in the ongoing 2016/2017 West Indies Cricket Board (WICB) Professional Cricket League (PCL) Digicel four-day competition, albeit he can still play as a “pay-for-play cricketer”, he gained the nod for the West Indies A team tour to Sri Lanka where he played three 50-over matches, capturing seven wickets bowling at high pace.

Speaking to Guyana Times Sport the speedster was quizzed on how he feels of the opportunity in star-studded tournament.

“I feel pretty confident knowing I had an excellent A-team tour in Sri Lanka, the conditions which should play similar because it’s that part of the world where there is not much help for fast bowlers. I think with my bowling form I’m going there with a lot of confidence; there is still a lot of games in tournament so I will be looking to be among the wickets,” Beaton stated.

The right-arm seamer who had a decent 2016 Hero Caribbean Premier League (CPL) for the Trinbago Knight Riders where he played 11 matches and picked up four wickets but bowled with great purpose throughout the tournament, will join the BPL with only 25 of the 42 preliminary matches played already. His franchise, Dhaka Dynamites is in third position on the points table of the seven team tournament.

The 24 year-old, who last played for his country in March during a four-day match, says that he feels somewhat bereaved over not getting a contract with his home team and posits that playing in the BPL will open a door of opportunities for him.

“Knowing that I was denied a contract by the local board for reasons that I still can’t understand and knowing that I have not been selected in the team for the third round of the regional 4-day, this news is very delightful to me since I get an opportunity to showcase my talent on a bigger field,” the former West Indies under-19 player stated.

Beaton, who gained the attention of India’s star batsman Yuvraj Singh on an A- team tour to India where the Indian likened him to great Caribbean bowler Curtly Ambrose had fell off the radar to some degree but over the last season has clearly been rejuvenated.

Asked as to what brought the improvement, he responded, “I did my normal fitness work and training but the fight that I have been getting I just looked to prove points to people that I am not what that they think I am.”

Though having difficulties playing for the territory, the lanky seamer still feels he can gain selection into the senior West Indies Team.

Beaton who departed these shores on Thursday will join a fleet of West Indies T20 stars in the fourth edition of the tournament which was won by Comilla Victorians last year.
