Belle West mechanic dies 6 days after beating

A mechanic from Belle West, West Bank Demerara has died six days after he was allegedly beaten by a group of drunken neighbours.

Dead is Yogeshwar Shivcharran, known as “Shah Rukh Khan” of Lot 485 Belle West Housing Scheme, Canal Number Two Polder. The 31-year-old man succumbed to his injuries on Sunday evening as a result of blunt trauma and other associated injuries.

According to the dead auto mechanic’s relatives, the man recently suffered from a mental illness, which led to regular seizures and worsened over the past two weeks.

Guyana Times understands that Shivcharran, during a mental breakdown, stripped his clothes off and went to his neighbours, who were having a drink in the community. This publication was told that the men, who were in a drunken state, became annoyed by Shivcharran’s behaviour and reportedly pelted him with beer bottles before allegedly beating him in the head and about the body.

The injured man was taken to the West Demerara Regional Hospital.

Shivcharran’s common-law wife, Aresa Persaud explained that he would normally recover from his episodes.

“He started pulling down things in de house and he saying that he seeing things so I was sacred from him so I go in de room and I lock up from because my lil’ daughter scared,” Persaud noted.

“After I lock up…I didn’t know where he left and gone…all I hear my neighbours hollering: ‘Shah Rukh Khan’. I could hear like they beat him up ‘cause I could hear de hit – how they beating he,” the man’s reputed wife related.

Persaud also told this newspaper that relatives had made several reports to La Grange Police Station from Tuesday onwards, but Police only showed up after he died.

Guyana Times understands that several men from the community were questioned about the incident.

Meanwhile, the dead man’s mother, Shantie Mohan, who was providing the Police with a statement when this newspaper visited the La Grange Police Station, said she wanted justice for her firstborn.

“I feel really bad and really sad; my first child to die like this and I need justice for this,” his mother declared. The woman also explained that her son was a good father, despite his challenges.

Shivcharran leaves to mourn his reputed wife, daughter and a son from a previous relationship. An investigation has been launched.
