“Berbice VA going full steam ahead”

The year has just began and many if not all sport organisations are getting themselves prepared for their calendar of activities. However, the extended rainy season has delayed the start of various events. Nevertheless, while some entities await sunshine others are busy off the field.

One such entity is the Berbice Volleyball Association (BVA) which held their annual meeting on Saturday in the Ancient County. Berbice is known to be the ‘Mecca’ of the sport here in Guyana therefore the authorities found it necessary to plan ahead of the season.
In its planning, the executive body of the BVA, according to its President Levi Nedd, is set to focus on three main areas of development; Schools Development, Females Development and Beach Development as they aim to make the sport more popular locally.
Nedd said the idea to have the sport in the school curriculum is to provide students with knowledge of how to play the sport and actually play the sport from nursery to tertiary.
Last year was a challenging but successful year for the sport in Berbice, but the highlighted moment was the triumph by Guyana male team which comprised only Berbicians at the Inter-Guiana Games (IGG) held here.
The association also managed to field teams at local and international tournaments which also included competitions in neighbouring Brazil in December.
On January 28 players and clubs will be rewarded for their efforts when the association hosts its annual award ceremony.
There will be eight awards up for grabs; top male and female club teams, top male and female player, most promising player, most improved player, junior player of the year and most disciplined player.
The other executives on the BVA are-Vice President-Yeudistir Seelochan, Secretary-Ian Baggot, Assistant Treasurer Secretary- Rashaad Razak, Public Relation Officer- Samuel Whyte. The patron of the association is Gregory Rambaran.
