CANU unearths 1276 lbs marijuana in container with heavy-duty equipment

A routine check by local law enforcement agents on a container on the John Fernandes Limited Wharf resulted in the discovering of over one thousand pounds of compressed marijuana.
This was confirmed by Head of the Customs Anti-Narcotics Unity (CANU) James Singh on Tuesday. He told Guyana Times that the narcotic amounted to 1276 pounds and was found in a container that arrived in Guyana since mid-May on the vessel MV Fouma.
According to reports, agents from the Guyana Revenue Authority’s (GRA) Drug Enforcement Unit and the Container Control Programme (CCP) were inspecting the container which was said to be carrying heavy-duty machinery, when the marijuana was found in several packets.
The container contained sawmill equipment as well. This newspaper understands that the container, destined for Guyana, arrived here on May 16 from Jamaica but had originated from the United States.
