Corriverton gets new Mayor, Deputy Mayor

Former Deputy Mayor of Corriverton, Berbice, Region Six (East Berbice-Corentyne) Krishnand Jaichand is now the town’s Mayor-elect when the municipality held its elections on Friday.

When the Council met on November 24 to elect a Mayor and Deputy Mayor, there was a tie between Gangadin and Jaichand for the position of Mayor, with each receiving seven votes on the 16-seat Council.

On Friday, Jaichand received nine votes, while Gangadin received six. After the voting concluded, Gangadin declined a nomination for the position of Deputy Mayor.

The Deputy Mayor’s position was contested between proprietor of Royal Graphics, Sheik Mahmood, and proprietor of Gamandi’s Hardware, J Gamandi. When the vote was put to the floor, it went in favour of Gamandi nine to five.

The Mayor-elect in a brief comment after the elections spoke about cooperation from all Councilors and promised to continue along the same path of development for the benefit of the township.

Meanwhile, the Deputy Mayor-elect, in his brief remarks, asked that the same attitude portrayed during the past seven months continue so to enhance the work of the Council and the town.

Eight of nine municipalities have so far submitted their dates for the internal elections. Anna Regina held their elections last Tuesday with Mayor Rabindranauth Mohan and Deputy Mayor Darshan Persaud being re-elected to their substantive positions. Lethem held its elections on Thursday; Rose Hall will hold its election on December 7 and Linden on December 8.

New Amsterdam and Mabaruma have scheduled their elections for December 14 and Bartica the following day.

The annual elections are being held for the purpose of electing a Mayor and Deputy Mayor of the various municipalities in keeping with Chapter 28:01 of the Municipal and District Council Act.

Meanwhile, in Georgetown, Deputy Mayor Sherrod Duncan is expected to challenge Mayor Patricia Chase-Green for the position of Mayor.
