Essequibo Islands, Parika Salem to kick-off tournament on Monday

Digicel’s Schools Football Championships…

Some Monday, the Digicel Schools Football Championships will kick-off at the Track and Field Stadium at Leonora with Essequibo Islands Secondary School clashing with Parika Salem Secondary School from 15:00 hrs.

 At launch of this tournament last month, it was revealed that more than 160 school would be vying for top honours and the chance to have one million dollars go towards a school project of their choice.

The highly anticipated Digicel Schools Football tournament will make its return on Monday

  Second place finisher will play for $700,000, third $400,000, and fourth $350,000 .All money won will go towards a school project of the winner’s choice.

The top regional winners of the straight knock-out tournament will be awarded $100,000 each.

 Digicel Head of Customer Care, Sherwin Osborne, told the gathering that the under-18 tournament will cater for students born on or after August 1, 1999. He implored teams to submit the relevant documentation to substantiate the ages of their players.

 “This year, we will not host a game unless each player has their documents, which must be submitted 24 hours before the game. We don’t want to field a team that is not eligible to play in the tournament,” Osborne explained.

 The defending champions are Chase Academic Foundation, with other winners being Christianburg/Wismar Secondary School (2012-2015) and Government Technical Institute (2011). The tournament will last for approximately six weeks, with the finals set for July 30 at the aforementioned venue.
