Despite a cloud looming over the start of Season III of the Guyana Football Federation’s (GFF), it officially kicked off on Sunday evening over at the National Track and Field Facility, Leonora, West Coast Demerara with two matches.
Fruta Conquerors FC took on newly promoted New Amsterdam United in the first match of the tournament and was made to toil in the first half.
Maybe it was nerves or maybe it was just an off day but young midfielder Jermaine Garrett was subbed off with just 35 minutes gone in the first half as he continually lost possession and misplaced passes; he was replaced by the seasoned Dwayne Lindie who immediately settled his side.

However NA United continued to make life miserable for Fruta who would eventually find the back of the net late in the game to walk away with a 1-0 victory and three points. Veteran striker Eon Alleyne pounced on a defensive lapse from the Berbicians and buried his chance with much aplomb in the 78th minute to the relief of the few supporters in the stand.

In the second match of the evening last season’s table topper, Guyana Defence Force (GDF) FC came up against Western Tigers FC in a spirited match that ended in a 1-1 stalemate.
It was an enthralling first half as GDF first struck through Carlus Adams in the 13th minute only for Andrew Murray Jr. to respond for Western Tigers in the 27th minute.
From there on it was end to end action as both teams created chances only for the finishing touches to be thwarted. The game remained in a deadlock for the rest of the 90 minutes and a as a result both teams had to settle for a point each.
The league will continue on Friday in the mining town of Linden at the McKenzie Sports Club (MSC) Ground with two fixtures.
At 18:00h Buxton United FC will face off against Ann’s Grove in an East Coast Demerara battle; that match will be followed by Victoria Kings taking on Linden based side Milerock FC at 20:00h.
