Hundreds of children from various primary and secondary schools from across the Essequibo Coast gathered at the Anna Regina Centre Ground on Friday to witness the costume and physical display, as well as the jump rope competition.
The event was organised by the Region Two (Pomeroon-Supenaam) Department of Education, however, it was noted there were fewer participating schools than in previous years. Abram Zuil and Anna Regina Multilateral Secondary Schools did not participate in this year’s costume competition.
Charity Secondary School’s ship titled “Liberty”Cotton Field Primary performing for the Judges30
The activity is part of Mashramani celebrations in Region Two and featured children displaying appropriate costumes under the theme “Celebrate with Dignity, Liberty and Greater Unity”.
Taking the stage first in the eight-10-year-old individual tropical category was Better Hope Primary. Teachers from that school were very creative and portrayed turtles in Guyana’s forest. They advocated for unity and liberation of Guyana’s turtles. Friendship Primary was next and portrayed the forested regions of Guyana and its majestic rainfall. In the same category, Hampton Court Primary beautifully crafted a representation of the national bird, the Canje Pheasant. Their float was made of natural materials, such as feathers, straws and nibi. The CV Nunes Primary also created a beautiful display. Friendship Primary copped first place, followed by Hampton Court Primary and Better Hope Primary.
There were also depictions of waterfalls, rose petals and ethnic displays, while the secondary category featured costumes depicting Mashramani messages, in keeping with the theme.
Cotton Field Secondary’s costumes portrayed unity, while Charity Secondary featured a boat, dubbed “Liberty”, which also highlighted the theme of Mashramani.
The students were colourfully dressed with glittering faces, and many costumes caught the eye, including those from Hampton Court Primary, Cotton Field Secondary and Charity Secondary. These costumes were beautifully designed and expertly presented.
