Parika man stabs wife, mother-in-law; attempts suicide

A fisherman from Parika, East Bank Essequibo, stabbed his common-law wife several times and wounded her mother during an altercation, after which he ingested a poisonous substance in a bid to take his own life. Thirty-seven-year-old Bhawanie Harrinarine is currently under Police guard at the West Demerara Regional Hospital.

Guyana Times was told that the woman and her mother are admitted patients at the Georgetown Public Hospital (GPHC). However the seriousness of their injuries is not yet known. The alleged stabbing incident occurred on Wednesday evening.

According to reports, the fisherman and his reputed wife had separated sometime ago, but Harrinarine would often visit the woman at her parents’ Greenwhich Park home. Wednesday evening was one such visit; however, it took a turn for the worst when the two ended up in an argument.

This publication understands that during the argument, the fisherman allegedly stabbed his wife and her mother. He then fled the scene and consumed a poisonous substance.

Relatives told this newspaper that earlier on Wednesday, they saw Harrinarine with the poison but were unaware of his intention to consume it. The man’s brother, Deonarine Harrinarine, recalled that his brother was seen with the poison and he reportedly claimed that he was keeping it for his boat captain.

According to information received, the captain related that he did not request poison from the fisherman. Guyana Times was also told that the man’s daughter was killed in an accident at Huston, East Bank Demerara last week and will be buried sometime today.Police investigations are continuing.
