Heavy and persistent rainfall in the city quashed any hopes of riders taking to the starting line to contest the sixth annual Powerade 11-race cycling programme at the inner circuit of the National Park on Saturday.
The event, organised by national cycling coach Hassan Mohamed, was slated to pedal off at 09:00h, but officials and riders were forced to seek shelter from the elements.
“The rain was too much, and we didn’t want to take the risk of having the riders compete in that kind of weather,” Mohamed told this publication moments after the event was officially called off.
He further stated that the programme will now be held on May 21 at the same venue, as this weekend is booked for the 34th annual Independence Three-Stage cycling meet.
