He made this request during his presentation at the unveiling of the Division’s Christmas plans, held recently at the Richard Faikal Police Training College at Suddie.

Ramnauth further explained that the lack of street lights, the narrow roadways, lack of vehicles in the division, stray cattle, drunk driving and rice farmers’ machinery being left on the roadways are all contributing to road accidents in the Division.

According to Ramnauth when compared to last year, there has been a 40 per cent increase in road fatalities and a 37 per cent increase in serious accidents within the division.

He also revealed that there was a 58 per cent increase in the number of drivers charged and punished for drunk driving as opposed to last year. There has also been a 47 per cent increase in cases for speeding on the roadways; 915 drivers were issued speeding tickets.

Ramnauth stressed that the increase in road accidents, both minor and serious, could be attributed to drunk driving and speeding. He however assured that the Division intends to work assiduously to reduce traffic congestion and road accidents as the year comes to a close.

He therefore urged drivers to especially observe the 5 Cs when using the road during the festive season and reminded of the ongoing “White Knight” campaign.
