Resident killed in WBD accident

An early evening accident on the Pouderoyen Public Road, West Bank Demerara caused the death of a man who resided in the same area on Saturday.

Sixty-year-old Bhagwandat Roopchand, of Lot 13 Bella Dam, Pouderoyen, lost his life at the hands of an alleged drunk driver around 19:00h.

According to reports, the man was walking along the Pouderoyen Public Road when he was struck by a speeding Toyota IST, bearing registration number PTT 8019. According to Police, the driver was proceeding north along the western side of the road, when he hit the pedestrian, who was crossing the road.

The man was rushed in an unconscious state to the West Demerara Regional Hospital, where he was admitted, but died some 30 minutes later. Reports reaching this publication indicated that the driver was found to be “heavily intoxicated” moments after the impact. An eyewitness relayed that the front windscreen of the silver IST was smashed in.

“The driver could hardly walk; he was standing on the road,” the eyewitness told this newspaper.

Additional reports stated that minutes after the impact was heard, a crowd of persons gathered and reprimanded the driver for causing the accident. At this point, the Police had not yet arrived. When ranks came subsequently, the driver was taken into custody.

Police disclosed on Sunday that the driver was tested and found to be above the legal alcohol limit, which corroborated the account of the eyewitnesses that he could “hardly walk” properly.The driver remains in custody, assisting with the investigation.
