Savory, Singh blast DCC to quarter-finals

Kemol Savory and Gajanand Singh produced man-of-the match performances on Sunday to power the Demerara Cricket Club (DCC) to two convincing victories on the first day of the fourth annual University of West Indies (UWI) National T20 Tournament in Trinidad and Tobago.
Playing at the UWI’s Sport and Physical Education Centre (SPEC), DCC defeated Duncan-Buggy Haynes (DBH) United by six wickets then Moosai Sports by seven wickets.

In the first match, DBH batted first and scored 158-8 in their 20 overs with William Perkins top scoring with 56 and received support from Yannick Ottley (31).
Medium pacer Sherfene Rutherford took 2-19 in four overs while off-spinner Coen Ismond and Keemo Paul had figures of 2-29 and 2-31 respectively.
In response DCC raced to 162-4 in 16.5 overs on the back of a blazing 64 not out off 44 balls by Singh and a scintillating 27-ball 58 by Savory.
Singh thumped eights fours and one six while Savory, a former Guyana Under-19 player,  cleared  the ropes  on four occasions and hit six fours in his high tempo innings.
Against Moosai, the combination of Paul (3-18), Kellon Carmichael (2-22) and Rutherford (2-26) helped bowl out the home team for 101 in 18 overs.  Johann Leezma top scored with 41 from 34 balls inclusive of four sixes and received support from Alden Daniel (14).
In pursuit of the meagre total, Singh a former National player was among the runs again hitting stroke-filled 55 from 32 balls.
The left-handed batsman hit 10 fours and got some support from young Sachin Singh with 16 from 14 balls; Adrian Geeban took 2-21 from four overs.
DCC will now play Trinidad and Tobago Police Force in the quarter-finals today at 18:00h.
Speaking after the victories Captain Derwin Christian was most pleased with the performance of his troops considering they only came off a plane a few hours before the first match at 14:00h.  Christian, a former national wicketkeeper batsman is hoping that the team can continue in their winnings ways and cop the championship trophy.
The UNICOM sponsored event sees the teams competing for $70,000 worth of prize money, with the winning team receiving at least $35,000 in cash and a champion’s trophy. Prizes will also be given to the Man of the Match and the player who hits the Biggest Six.
