Local Government Commission
Former Acting Town Clerk Carol Sooba and former Local Government Ministers Norman Whittaker and
Clinton Collymore have been nominated as the People’s Progressive Party/Civic’s representatives to the Local Government Commission (LGC).
This was disclosed by Opposition Chief Whip Gail Teixeira, during a press conference on Wednesday at the Party’s headquarters, Freedom House, Robb Street.
She noted that the names have already been dispatched to Communities Minister Ronald Bulkan.
Minister Bulkan had complained in the past of the delay in the establishment of the Commission, blaming the PPP/C Opposition for holding up the process by not naming their nominees.
However, Teixeira had lambasted the Minister for being misleading, explaining that he never followed the correct procedures to formally request that the names be submitted by Opposition Leader Bharrat Jagdeo.
Last month, Bulkan disclosed only one member from the Government’s side has been confirmed to serve on the commission, while other nominees are yet to be confirmed.
The Commission will consist of eight members: four Government nominees, three from the parliamentary Opposition and one from a parliamentary process.
Following the historic return of Local Government Elections, tensions and controversy have surrounded the establishment of some of the local democratic organs.
As such, calls were made for the establishment of the LGC, which will have oversight over the various local authorities in the country.
