Taxi driver remanded for cocaine, guns, ammo possession

A taxi driver of Duncan Street, Campbellville, Georgetown who was on Independence Day busted with three guns, matching ammunition and a quantity of cocaine when Police descended on his home following a report of domestic violence, was on Tuesday morning remanded to prison by City Magistrate Annette Singh.

Trevor Rodriguez, 32, was charged with having in his possession 11.363 kilos of cocaine for the purpose of trafficking; one 9mm pistol, a Glock 9mm pistol and a .357 Taurus Magnum revolver along with matching rounds in his possession without being the holder of a firearm licence.

On the day in question, Rodriguez had threatened to shoot his wife, Amanda Rodriquez, who in fear reported the incident to a co-worker who then quickly communicated the report to another co-worker who readily came to the rescue of the woman. Prosecutor Simmons related that the co-worker took away the gun from the perpetrator and contacted Police officials, who swooped down on the couple’s premises. The woman reportedly handed the pistol over to ranks who conducted a search on the said premises, leading to the discovery of the two other guns and cocaine concealed in two cylinders with false bottoms.

Based on reports reaching this publication, the accused is in the habit of abusing his spouse and despite a few moments of hesitation when asked if she wished to proceed with the charges laid against her husband, the woman replied in the affirmative.

Rodriguez also faced other charges; making use of threatening language and behaviour towards his wife. He is expected to return to court on June 13.
