Teen killed after gun accidently goes off

A teenager was on Thursday evening killed after a gun he was carrying accidently went off at a farming camp at Canje Creek, Berbice. The shooting occurred at about 18:30h.

Dead is Handel Daniels, 17, of Caracas Village, West Canje, Berbice.

According to reports the teenager was in the company of others but left to use the washroom and as he made his way down the farming camp, the steps collapsed. From reports, the young man was carrying a gun and it went off, hitting him once to the abdomen.

When contacted, “B” Division Commander Ian Amsterdam confirmed the fatal shooting while noting that a team of investigators was sent to investigate.

He revealed that after the teen was shot, he was picked up with the intention of seeking medical attention at the New Amsterdam Hospital but was first treated at Baracara Health Centre. The teen reportedly succumbed on his way to New Amsterdam.

This newspaper was told that persons who accompanied the teenager for medical attention, could not give an accurate account of the shooting but related what was told to them by the injured lad before he took his last breath.

The men were detained and questioned but were later released.

The Commander is awaiting the return of the investigative team to brief him on the incident. The gun, Guyana Times understands, was not recovered.

The Police are continuing their investigations.
