Marques punching to put Guyana back on the map

Current Guyana and Caribbean Flyweight Champion Dexter Marques said he is pushing in round the clock training ahead of his upcoming fights which he said once successful, will put Guyana back on the boxing map.
The highly anticipated “Sangre Malo” (Bad Blood) Card billed for January 20 at the Cliff Anderson Sports Hall will see Guyana’s three best including the “Cobra” Dexter Gonzales, Elton Dharry and Marques, squaring off against Venezuela’s trio of Dionis Martinez, Felipe Lares and Jesus Vargas.

Marques, during and exclusive with Guyana Times Sport following Fight Night’s official press conference which was held Thursday at the Sports Max store located in the Giftland Mall, said his training has been intense and he is ready to go out and defend his name as well as country.
“So far my preparations have been coming good, I have some of the best local amateur fighters in Guyana who give me some very good work because I need the guys who are faster than me to help me get further conditioned”.
He continued, “My Coaches also helps me put in the work, Christmas time was a difficult but we got everything under control and I’m preparing myself for the fight first on January 20 then I’ll do whatever I have to do”.
The upcoming card will be headlined by the Marques/ Martinez fight which the Guyanese champ will use as preparation for his Commonwealth Title fight against UK’s Jay Harris on March 31, 2018 at the Copper Box Arena.
Speaking about his training leading up to Sangre Malo as well as the title fight, Marques said he has been pushing in the hours due to him acknowledging the importance of the fight versus the Venezuelan.
“It’s a big fight for me, because everyone is saying I have to win the fight in order to get the Commonwealth title fight. I know I will win the fight but people will want to know what round the knockout came and so on, but I know I’m the best man and I’ll come out successful on January 20”.
“The title fight is very important to me and it’s a step closer to putting Guyana back on the map so I will go out there and do what I have to do. I really appreciate the fight so I could show persons that I cannot only beat fighters in Guyana but I can beat fighters overseas too”, said Marques.
The local prizefighter concluded his interview by calling for support from the Guyanese boxing fans to come out and rally around the fighters. “We need all the support we can get because boxing will get back to a good level. Once we have the support we will do well, the entire Caribbean shows us respect so we just have to focus and keep doing what we do best”. He ended.
