‘Baggage boy’ gets 18 months for simple larceny

A South Ruimveldt, Georgetown man will spend the next 18 months in prison after he admitted to carting away a television set and other appliances from a dwelling house on Dennis Street, Campbellville, Georgetown.

Magistrate Sunil Scarce jailed 42-year-old Kelvin Gray who admitted that he broke and entered the premises of the Virtual Complaint (VC), Tamika Jequinn on June 20, 2017, and stole one television set and an electronic tablet, a total value of $105,000.

Gray initially pleaded “guilty with explanation” and told the Magistrate that he works at Bourda Market transporting people’s luggage around. According to Gray, on the day in question, he was hired by someone to transport the said package which he could not have reasonably known to contain stolen articles.

However the Prosecution revealed otherwise, stating that the VC had secured her premises at 10:30h that day and departed for work. The defendant was seen in the area around 14:00h, kicking down the door of the dwelling house. The Police was notified.

The court heard that the defendant had not completed his basic schooling and faced severe difficulties securing employment; being rejected by many over time, forcing him to take up the occupation of a “baggage boy” to maintain himself.

According to Gray, he has no wife or children – only a grandmother as next of kin and opted to accept responsibility for the offence in light of these circumstances. The man had previously spent four months in prison some time ago on an assault charge.
