Conductor killed after bus topples on muddy road

As the road carnage continues, a West Bank Demerara family has plunged into mourning following an accident that killed a minibus conductor Monday evening.

Dead is Roger “Jerry” Waldron, 30, of Lot 57 Good Intent, West Bank Demerara who died after the Route 31 minibus in which he was the conductor toppled at the Nismes Public Road, while negotiating through roadside mud on a turn.

The accident occurred in the vicinity of the Gafoors Nismes Complex, WBD where the mud was temporarily moved to the roadside to facilitate ongoing drainage works.

Guyana Times understands that the accident occurred around 19:00h. When this publication arrived on the scene, the minibus was still on its side with heavy mud on the wheels and in surrounding environs. This newspaper was told that public-spirited citizens assisted in rushing passengers to the West Demerara Regional Hospital.

At the hospital, family members of the injured were anxiously awaiting word on their loved ones, while the family of the deceased conductor was trying to come to grips with the devastating news. As porters pushed the dead man’s body out to the mortuary, his mother broke down in tears exclaiming: “Why Jerry? Ow meh baby.” She was consoled by her daughter and other family members.

Meanwhile, a family member of an injured teenager who was a passenger in the minibus told this publication that she had to be administered emergency oxygen as a result of irregular breathing.

Most passengers suffered minor injuries while the bus driver, sustained cuts and bruises to his hands. (Shemuel Fanfair)
