Cricketers Jacobs, Blyden give back to Stella Maris

Stella Maris Primary School benefited from two of its past students, Steven Jacobs and Travis Blyden, who presented over two hundred books, crayons and learning charts to the institution.
The pair decided to make the contribution to the school in the form of the aforementioned items because they think it could assist a great deal in the students’ development.

The presentation was done during a simple hand over at the school’s library at Woolford Avenue on Tuesday morning. Jacobs was absent due to national duties with the Guyana Jaguars, but was represented by Blyden, who found it necessary to make such contribution.
“On behalf of Steven Jacobs and myself we would like to make this contribution to Stella Maris because we think it is key that we can help since we know the efforts made by teachers over the years” detailed Blyden.
Usually when athletes give back to their schools is in the form of sport gears or something associated with sport, however, the pair chose a different path because they belief that the learning tools would be able to mole the students’ education. “We know from primary school there should be a strong base for education and the gear wouldn’t be much need for them at the primary level but the books are essential at this stage.”
Graduate Senior Assistant Mistress, Onika Forde, said they are thankful for the gesture. “This morning we are very elated to have two former pupils Steven Jacobs and Travis Blyden….They would have donated these books and we will use them to develop our library and it will also be used in the lower level in the phoenix programme. We are very happy they would have thought of us because they left here quite a while.”
Meanwhile, Graduate Headmistress acting, Sherron Howard, was also grateful for the contribution. “I would like to take this opportunity to thank the young men who took it upon themselves to remember their old school and it is opportunity like this when young people can put an effort to give back is what we appreciate and that is what help us to be good teachers and leaders for our children.”
Over the years the school has produced several players that represented Guyana at the senior level, among them, Ramnaresh Sarwan, Steven Jacobs, Vishaul Singh and Orin Forde. Jacobs was a student of the school from 1994-2000 while Blyden attended from 1995-2001. Jacobs represented the school in cricket in 2000 while Blyden led the school team to top honours in 2001.
