Escapee jailed

An escapee was on Friday sentence to spend the next year in prison when he appeared at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Courts before Magistrate Annette Singh.
Mark McCalmont originally pleaded not guilty to the offence, which stated that on December 17, 2015, at Golden Grove, East Bank Demerara, he unlawfully escaped from Police custody.
The prosecution contended that on the day in questioned, the defendant was arrested and slapped with a break and entering and larceny charge. He was placed on a bench in the Enquires Office at the Golden Grove Police Station when he escaped from custody.
However on the same day, he was rearrested and charged with that offence.
Magistrate Annette Singh stated that upon conclusion of the prosecution’s statements, it was determined that a prima facie case has been made out against the defendant.
As such, the accused was found guilty and sentenced to one year imprisonment.
