Poonam Singh – GTT’s brand warrior, aspiring Guyanese star

When one thinks of Poonam Singh, our minds automatically shift to the budding young star’s involvement in the 2012-2013 GT&T Song & Jingle Competition, her reign as Miss Global Guyana 2015, her patriotic 50th Independence hit song “G.U.Y.A.N.A.”, or her rapidly rising social media profile. However, these are but a few of the features that make up this inspirational young lady – Poonam remains larger than life.
Poonam describes herself as a strong, positive and happy lioness, who is always

ready to conquer whatever the universe wishes to shift her way.
“I’ve made it this far… as a girl from a beautiful Third World country… and I just know it in my bones… I’ve a far way more to go!” says the strong-willed and optimistic young woman.
Born on February 19, 1995, she grew up as any normal ‘country girl’ would, in a small house filled with big hearts at Canal Number One on the West Bank of Demerara (WBD). “Born to sing and smile”, Poonam recalls her mother’s story of her hysterical crying upon entrance into the world that was quickly transformed into a heartening smile after a quick slap on her derriere.
As any child with naïve thoughts, Poonam’s belief that life was about “getting what you want – fairy-tale happiness”, was transformed as she matured, realising it was more of a responsibility, a journey, a rollercoaster, and so many other things, but above all she confessed – “life is a gift, your gift!”
This realisation by large inspired her platform, “Eradicating Suicide”, when she represented Guyana at the Miss Global International pageant in 2016 and placed second.
Though her song “Life is a Gift” has gained enormous traction on social media, Poonam was more overwhelmed by the feedback she received from persons battling depression and suicidal thoughts – the ones to whom the song is dedicated.
The young brand ambassador believes that setting and focusing on the pursuit of one’s life goals can help in the battle against depression and suicidal thoughts.
She strongly believes that one plays a huge role in the shaping of one’s destiny, sharing her gentle wisdom: “on the piano, there are black and white keys… You have to play both in order to get a good song.”Poonam’s goal is to continue to be proactive in stamping out suicide by not only addressing the issue in schools, but to build a body where suicidal persons can not only call but meet with people who are able to offer assistance.
Guyana’s rising star is a role model to many, and is committed to inspiring young women to live more and helping communities and our country to do more. She just released her latest single “Touch Me”, already popular on the local airwaves.
“I can talk to children and ensure at the end of the day, they can at least see that life is a precious gift that should be valued. People will forget what you say to them, but they will never forget how you made them feel. So, if I can make them feel better, then my mission will definitely be accomplished,” says the young woman, who is committed to her role as a “warrior” to make a difference.
