The keys to the Aurora Primary and Nursery Schools located in Region Two (Pomeroon-Supenaam) were officially handed over by the Regional Executive Officer (REO), Rupert Hopkinson to the Regional Engineer on Monday.
The move followed a call from representatives of the schools’ Parent-Teachers Associations (PTAs), who were contemplating a protest action if the keys were not handed over on time. Parents had met with Guyana Times to vent their frustration over the situation.
According to information reaching this publication, the keys were handed over and cleaners were tackling the interior of the buildings. A source from the Education Ministry said the children were expected to be in the new schools by Friday. Currently, they are being housed at private homes, where classes are being conducted.
Regional Democratic Council (RDC) People’s Progressive Party (PPP) Councillor and Good Hope-Pomona Neighbourhood Democratic Council (NDC) Chairman, Showkat Ali pointed out that parents were incurring additional expenses to ensure that their children attended classes. The Aurora Primary and Nursery Schools were constructed at a cost of $118 million.
