TSU rank killed as boat capsizes in Potaro River

A young Guyana Police Force (GPF) rank attached to the Tactical Services Unit (TSU) is feared dead after the boat he was travelling in capsized in the Potaro River, Region Eight (Potaro-Siparuni).

The incident occurred sometime around noon on Friday in the Amatuk Falls area.
The dead man has been identified as Special Constable 14536 Akeem Hyles, 22, of New Amsterdam, Berbice.
According to a release from the Police, Hyles was in a boat with other Police ranks, members of the Guyana Defence Force (GDF) and representatives of the Guyana Geology and Mines Commission (GGMC). The team was on its way to the conduct raids on illegal mining camps in the area during which the boat came into contact with the rough terrain and subsequently capsized.
Police’s Public Relations Officer Ivelaw Whittaker reported that “the body has not yet been recovered and a search is in progress”.
Whittaker went on to say that Hyles had departed the Ogle Airport Friday morning along with the other members of the Joint Services, who were dispatched to assist the GGMC in dealing with illegal mining being carried out in the Kaieteur National Park area.
Guyana Times contacted F Division (Interior locations) Commander Rabindranauth Budhram, who confirmed there was an accident and that his ranks were on their way to the site at the time.
