A man was arrested on Sunday after he and his accomplice, who remains on the run, reportedly opened fire on the Police at Regent Street, Georgetown.
Based on information received, Police, acting on information, went to a certain part of Regent Street, Georgetown, where they observed two men standing in front of a fast-food outlet. As a Police corporal approached them, they both whipped out guns from their pants crotch and pointed same at him. The policeman accordingly took evasive action and discharged three rounds in their direction, forcing them to run.
One of the suspects reportedly ran into the fast-food outlet, while the other ran in the direction of the Plaisance minibus park. The Police reportedly went in pursuit of him, leaving the other in the fast-food outlet.
In attempting to evade capture, the suspect scaled a fence at Guyoil Gas Station and jumped into a canal, but quick action by the Police led to his arrest along Charlotte Street, Georgetown.
When the Police returned to the fast-food outlet, the other suspect had disappeared. However, acting on information received, a search was conducted in the kitchen area of the outlet, during which a Taurus Judge handgun with five 410 rounds of ammunition were found in the garbage.
The suspect who was arrested remains in custody, and is assisting Police with their investigations.
