1 dead, 1 critical after lorry turns turtle

One man is now dead while another is in a critical condition following an accident along the Yarikita Access road, North West District (NWD), Region One (Barima-Waini), on Sunday.

The dead man has been identified as Mark Wells, 26, of Kumaka Water Front, Mabaruma, NWD. Critically injured is Edwin King, 35, of Kumaka Stretch, Mabaruma, while 17-year-old Leroy Chu, also of Kumaka, also sustained injuries about his body.
Preliminary investigations by the Police revealed that on the day in question at about 17:50h, motor lorry GWW 609, driven by a 27-year-old man of Kumaka Stretch, Mabaruma, NWD, was proceeding along the Yarikita Access Road at a fast rate of speed when he lost control of the vehicle while descending a hill.
The vehicle, the driver claimed, had a defective steering arm and it gave out on Sunday. As a result, the vehicle slammed into a mud wall, thus causing it to spin several times before toppling.

Wells, Chu and King, who were reportedly in the tray of the vehicle, were reportedly flung into the air and onto the roadway where they sustained bodily injuries.
Wells received lacerations to the right ankle, and abrasions to his left shoulder and about his body while King received abrasions about his body and Chu is suffering from lacerations to the left side of his head, left ankle and abrasions to the back left side of his shoulder.
Three three men were taken to the Mabaruma Regional Hospital where Wells was pronounced dead on arrival.
His body is at the Mabaruma Regional Hospital Mortuary awaiting post-mortem. King and Chu were treated and admitted patients suffering from fractured right ribs and open fracture to the right ankle.
King’s condition is listed as critical while Chu is in a stable condition.
