Taxi driver Terrence Mc Donald of Lot 54 Bagots Street, Rosignol, West Coast Berbice became the latest road fatality yesterday when he lost control of the vehicle he was driving and crashed it into a lorry parked on the Dantzig public road at Mahaicony East Coast Demerara.

Saulita Malikish, a female passenger, sustained severe injuries in that accident and is currently a patient in the Intensive Care Unit of the Georgetown Public Hospital; while 19-year-old Gary Wilson, 43-year-old Wilfred Wilson, and 28-year-old Steve James were all treated for minor injuries at the Mahaicony Cottage Hospital and sent away.
Reports are that the car being driven by the 41-year-old Mc Donald with the four others as passengers was proceeding along the Dantzig Public Road at a fast rate; and as he negotiated a turn, he lost control of the vehicle and crashed it into a parked lorry.
Mc Donald and Malikish were pulled from the wreckage in an unconscious state, and were rushed to the Mahaicony Cottage Hospital before being transferred to the Georgetown Public Hospital, where they were admitted in the Intensive Care Unit. Mc Donald later succumbed to his injuries, while Malikish remains a patient at the medical facility.
Deisa Mc Donald, a niece of the dead man, told Guyana Times that her uncle worked as a taxi operator ferrying persons from Georgetown to Rosignol. He left home at about 10:00h yesterday, and the family received information about the accident at about 13:00h. “The people at the Mahaicony Hospital called to say that my uncle was involved in an accident and he was at the hospital… His mother and other relatives were heading to the Mahaicony Hospital when they received a call to head straight to Georgetown, because he was transferred (to the GPHC),” she detailed.
She noted that family members arrived at the GPHC to find her uncle being attended to by five doctors in the ICU, and he was slipping in and out of consciousness. At about 18:00h, relatives in Berbice received news of his death.
Mc Donald had been working as a taxi driver for the past two years, prior to which he was involved in construction and masonry.
The aggrieved niece remembered her uncle as a very loving and caring individual. He leaves to mourn his mother, wife, only daughter and other relatives.
Police are continuing their investigations into this fatal accident.
Meanwhile, Michael Simon, 59, of Amelia’s Ward, Linden died on Friday evening after he was struck by a sports car. The accident occurred at about 18:45h in the vicinity of Amelia’s Ward Highway. Reports are sketchy but Guyana Times was told that the driver is in Police custody assisting with investigation.
