1 dead after speeding car slams into parked lorry

A motor car driver was killed while several others were injured after he reportedly crashed into a parked truck along the Gangaram, East Canje public road on Saturday.

Dead: Patrick David

The dead man has been identified as 40-year-old Patrick David, of Canefield Settlement, East Canje, Berbice. He was the driver of motor car PSS 820.
Those injured are Hemraj Sheodarsom, 36, of West Canefield Settlement; Dellon Giddings, 36, of Rose Hall, East Canje, and Javed Sherif, 17, of Second Street, Overwinning, East Bank Berbice.
It was reported that the parked lorry is owned by Harish Kupsammy of Gangaram, East Canje.
At the time the accident occurred, the car was proceeding south along the eastern drive lane at a fast rate of speed.
It is alleged by Sheodarsom that they were drinking at a popular bar and after he become intoxicated, the now dead man collected his car key and started to drive instead. On their way home, David reportedly lost control of the said vehicle and collided with the right-side front of the parked truck.
As a result of the collision, the motor car ended up in a nearby trench where the driver and occupants received injuries about their bodies.
They were pulled from the vehicle in an unconscious condition by public-spirited citizens and escorted to the New Amsterdam Public Hospital where they were seen and examined by a doctor who pronounced David dead on arrival.
The body was then taken to the Arokium Funeral Home awaiting a post-mortem examination.

Sherif was treated and was later transferred to Georgetown Public Hospital in an unconscious condition where he was admitted in a serious condition.
Sheodarsom and Giddings were also later admitted as patients at the New Amsterdam Public Hospital for observation. Their conditions are regarded as stable. A breathalyser test conducted on Sheodarsom proved that he was above the legal limit of alcohol consumption.
