1 dead, baby feared drowned in Sophia accident

One man is dead and a baby feared drowned after the car in which they were travelling on Dennis Street, Sophia, Greater Georgetown, plunged into a trench.
The dead man is yet to be identified and the search continues for the missing baby.
According to eyewitnesses, two men were travelling in a motorcar when the driver lost control sending the vehicle into a nearby trench.
Guyana Times was told that in no time, the vehicle was completely immersed in the trench. Public spirited persons, who witnessed the incident, plunged into the trench and attempted to rescue the passengers. After a brief struggle with the doors of the car, they managed to free the men, who both appeared to be unconscious.
Shortly after, suspicion began to brew about a third passenger being trapped in the vehicle. Rescuers rushed back into the water to locate the body of what was believed to be that of a baby.
However, in a video that surfaced on social media, persons could be heard shouting that they could not find the child.
Meanwhile, when this publication visited the Georgetown Public Hospital where those pulled from the car were taken, it was confirmed that one of the men was pronounced dead on arrival.
A subsequent visit to the scene revealed that the car had already been removed from the trench, with persons informing that they had not discovered a third body. The Police are investigating.
