A 28-year-old man is now dead while three of his friends are injured after a trip to a creek along the Linden-Soesdyke Highway on Monday. The four were heading to the creek at 20:00h despite the national curfew.
Dead is Christopher Nicholson. He died at approximately 07:00h on Tuesday in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) of the Georgetown Public Hospital.
According to Police, around 20:00h on Monday, Nicholson was driving HD 576 with two teen passengers – girls aged 15 and 17 – and 23-year-old Rondewl Black to a creek when he crashed into a utility pole on the East Bank of Demerara (EBD).
Reports are that the car was speeding when Nicholson lost control and slammed into the electrical pole.
The occupants of the vehicle, who were attired in beach wear, were pulled out of the wreckage by public-spirited citizens and rushed to the hospital.
Several boxes of food and alcoholic beverages were found in the back seat of the vehicle. Investigations are ongoing.
The national curfew – 18:00h to 06:00h- was implemented to curb the spread of the deadly coronavirus disease (COVID-19). Since its implementation, a number of persons have been arrested for disregarding it. Also, on Monday evening, despite lockdown measures across the country, a heated cockfight was hosted at approximately 08:00h at Tarla Dam, Meten-Meer-Zorg, West Coast Demerara (WCD).
Persons were congregated ed in a large group even as calls for social distancing have heightened in recent days. In fact, the gathering consisted of more than 20 persons, many of whom were not wearing face masks.
