A man has been taken into custody after a party of Policemen found a quantity of marijuana at Four Miles Squatting Area in Bartica Cuyuni-Mazaruni (Region Seven).
The Police have conducted several raids in Region Seven and at Swan, on the Soesdyke/ Linden Highway. Police say the first raid was conducted between 11:00h and 13:00h on Friday, when a team of ranks conducted a search of several houses in the Four Miles Squatting Area, including the home of a 41-year-old businessman.
While no illegal items were found in the businessman’s home, Police conducted a further search in the surrounding area, and about 50 feet away from the house, a quantity of leaves, seeds and stems of the cannabis plant were found buried.
The businessman was shown the find, but he denied knowledge of same. He was nonetheless taken to the Bartica Police Station, where the illicit substance was weighed in his presence and amounted to 1kg, 56 grams. He remains in custody, pending investigations.
Meanwhile, Police ranks in Regional Division 4’B’ (East Bank Demerara) on Thursday confiscated 2,453 grams of cannabis during an operation conducted at Swan, on the Soesdyke/Linden Highway.
Ranks attached to the Timehri Police Station have said they were at the time conducting raid exercises in several villages on the Linden/ Soesdyke Highway when they visited Swan and a search was conducted in the bushes in the vicinity of Marudi Creek.
During the search, the ranks unearthed three black plastic bags, all containing a number of leaves, seeds, and stems of the cannabis plant.
The illegal substance was taken to the Timehri Police Station, where it was weighed and amounted to 2,453 grams. No one was arrested, but investigations continue. (G9)
