1 in custody for robbery of overseas-based Berbice couple

A man is currently in Police custody for his alleged involvement in the robbery of an overseas-based couple and their taxi driver, who were robbed at gunpoint after arriving in Guyana.
According to a senior police source, investigators had arrested six individuals in relation to the crime; however, five of those persons were released after being questioned.

The couple’s Corentyne, Berbice home where they were robbed

The source added that at present, information suggests that the bandits were waiting to execute a robbery, and may have had knowledge that the couple was returning to Guyana and decided to stakeout since they were not sure of a specific time of the couple’s arrival.
Reports are the couple arrived at their Fourth Street Johns, Corentyne, Berbice, Region Six (East Berbice-Corentyne) home at about 01:00h on Tuesday and were about to enter the yard when three masked men wielding cutlasses and guns attacked them.
The armed trio was reportedly hiding in a neighbouring yard. The bandits waited until the man and woman had exited the vehicle before they made their move to rob them.
The couple was relieved of US$7000 by the armed men, who also stole several security cameras, which the husband and wife had in their possessions at that time, along with their passports.
Additionally, the bandits also stole the couple’s hand luggage, which contained other valuable items.
Meanwhile, the taxi driver, who had picked up the couple from Cheddi Jagan International Airport (CJIA), and transported them to their Berbice home was also robbed of an undisclosed amount of cash.
However, no attempt was made by the armed men to enter the couple’s home. After they secured their loot from the man and his wife along with their taxi driver, the bandits made good their escape on foot.
