The Guyana Defence Force’s (GDF) First Quarterly Fitness Competition for 2026 concluded at Base Camp Stephenson, with the 1 Infantry Battalion delivering a dominant performance to secure first place in the male category. The 3 Infantry Battalion finished second following a strong and consistent showing, while the 31 Special Forces Squadron claimed third place to complete the podium positions. In the female category, the Guyana National Reserve A Team emerged victorious. The Coast Guard secured second place, with the Guyana National Reserve B Team finishing third.

The competition served as a rigorous assessment of the Force’s operational readiness, subjecting participants to a series of physically and mentally demanding activities designed to test endurance, coordination and performance under pressure. The event underscored the Force’s continued emphasis on maintaining high levels of fitness as a core component of military effectiveness. Chief of Defence Staff, Brigadier Omar Khan, MSS, in his remarks, emphasised the importance of such competitions in evaluating readiness across the Force. He noted that sustained training and assessment are essential to ensuring ranks remain capable, resilient and prepared to respond to evolving operational demands. He further encouraged participants to continue striving for excellence, reinforcing that fitness, discipline, and teamwork remain fundamental to mission success and the overall effectiveness of the GDF.
