1 to face Judge and jury, other remanded on separate rape charges
A man who was charged for raping a minor has been remanded to prison while another, who was charged contrary to Section 3 (3) of the Sexual Offences Act, Chapter 8:03, will have to face a Judge and jury.
In the first case, Kumar Sukhram called “Akash” of Kingston, Georgetown, appeared before Magistrate Alex Moore at the Springland’s Magistrate’s Court.
A Police report said that 25-year-old Sukhram was charged for rape contrary to Section 3 (3) of the Sexual Offences Act, Chapter 8:03. He was arrested on November 18, 2019.
The charge was laid against him on March 5, 2020, after Police conducted investigations. He was not required to enter a plea to the indictable charge.
Following a Preliminary Inquiry, Magistrate Moore ruled that a prima facie case was made out against Sukhram to put him on trial for the offence by a jury before a High Court Judge.
The accused professed his innocence to the court by saying, “I’m innocent sir”. He was released on $100,000 bail pending the hearing and determination of his trial.
Meanwhile, in a similar matter, 20-year-old Mark Fontanelle of Lot 67 First Phase, Kwakwani, Upper Berbice River, was remanded to prison.
He appeared via Zoom before Magistrate Wanda Fortune charged with rape of a child under 16 contrary to Section 10 (3) of the Sexual Offences Act Chapter 8:03.
The accused, who was arrested on November 7, was not required to plead to the indictable charge. His case continues on November 19. (G9)
