1 year in prison, $600,000 fine for ganja trafficker
Robert Vyphuis, a 37-year-old gold miner of Nottinghamshire, Linden, Region 10 (Upper Demerara-Berbice), has been sentenced to one year’s imprisonment and fined $603,600 after pleading guilty to trafficking 400 grammes of marijuana.
Vyphuis appeared before Linden Magistrate Wanda Fortune on Tuesday to answer a charge of possession of narcotics for the purpose of trafficking, contrary to Section 5(1)(a)(i) of the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Control Act.
Vyphuis was arrested on July 3 at about 16:10 hours, after Police ranks attached to the Mabura Police Outpost intercepted him on a motorcycle in front of the Mabura Police Outpost. A search was carried out on his person and belongings, during which a bulky transparent plastic bag containing a quantity of marijuana was found on the motorcycle.
He accordingly was arrested and taken, along with the cannabis, to the Mabura Police Outpost.(G1)
