10-year-old struck down by minibus

A ten-year-old boy was rushed to the hospital on Sunday morning after he was struck by a minibus at Vergenoegen, East Bank Essequibo (EBE).

The boy, yet to be identified, is said to be in critical condition at the West Demerara Regional Hospital.

According to reports reaching Guyana Times, the incident occurred at around 09:00h. The vehicle in which the boy was travelling was headed to Parika, East Bank Demerara (EBE).

Ranks at the Leonora Police Station confirmed the accident.

The boy reportedly was in the back of a Canter when it had stopped and he jumped out and attempted to cross the road. A minibus passing at the time heading in the same direction struck him.

According to eyewitnesses, as a result of the impact, the child was flung some distance away.

One eyewitness revealed what transpired to this publication: “I was sitting by that shop and I wasn’t really paying attention. Out of nowhere I heard this loud bam! And when I get up and check, I saw the boy lying in that grass corner. People start to run out and they pick him up. When I went and look at him, his head buss up.”

Reports are that the boy’s head was partly crushed as a result of the impact.

He was rushed by public spirited persons to the hospital in an unconscious manner.

Details surrounding the incident are still sketchy, however, it was revealed that the driver of the minibus was taken into Police custody and is assisting with investigations.

The driver of the canter is also assisting the Police with investigations.
