$100M “green energy” system commissioned in Berbice

A 0 million Green Energy System was on Friday commissioned at Tain, Corentyne, Region Six (East Berbice-Corentyne).

The project was commissioned at the Nand Persaud International Communication

Inc Centre (NPIC) and will see the call centre utilising 720 solar panels to produce 220 kw per hour.

Director of NPIC, Rajendra Persaud, explained that the company has already started to use the renewable source of energy and has also made the excess available to the Guyana Power and Light but there is no system in place to measure the amount being sent to the national grid and thus attach a fee to it.

Speaking at the simple ceremony on Friday, Prime Minister Moses Nagamootoo in lauding the initiative said the time has come for Guyana to seek alternative sources of energy.

Despite the prospects of fossil fuel being produced by Guyana, the Prime Minister said the country should not be totally dependent on oil.

Meanwhile, Business Minister Dominic Gaskin thanked the company for its contribution in realising Government’s prospects of making Guyana a green economy.

Region Six Chairman David Armogan reiterated the need for renewable energy by highlighting that the cost for fossil fuel is rising, while its acquisition and use has many devastating effects on the environment.
