107 new COVID-19 cases recorded

…Govt sourcing vaccines for 4-mth to 6-y-o children

Total infections of COVID-19 in Guyana have reached 67,221, after another 107 new cases were reported on Tuesday.
There are still 1251 confirmed deaths, with five persons in the Intensive Care Unit. In addition, 29 persons are in institutional isolation, 795 in home isolation and 10 in institutional quarantine.
Additionally, a total of 65,141 persons has recovered. Over 800 active infections are still being monitored across health facilities. Meanwhile, 658,476 tests have been processed to date.
An analysis shows new cases dispersed across eight administrative regions, with nine in Region One (Barima-Waini); nine in Region Two (Pomeroon-Supenaam); 10 in Region Three (Essequibo Islands-West Demerara); 61 in Region Four (Demerara-Mahaica); two in Region Five (Mahaica-Berbice); 10 in Region Six (East Berbice-Corentyne); one in Region Seven (Cuyuni-Mazaruni) and five in Region 10 (Upper Demerara-Berbice).
There were no new reported cases in Regions Eight (Potaro-Siparuni) and Nine (Upper Takutu-Upper Essequibo).
Latest vaccination figures show that so far, 443,529 or 86.5 per cent of adults have taken a first dose, while some 343,324 or 66.9 per cent of persons 18 years and over are fully vaccinated.
For adolescents between the ages of 12 and 17, 25,592 or 35.1 per cent are fully vaccinated. Vaccination is also available for children between the ages of five and 11 years, and 3090 have received the first dose thus far.
In addition, 68,305 persons have returned for their booster shots thus far.
With FDA granting approval for use of vaccines for children between six months and four years of age, Health Minister, Dr Frank Anthony positioned on Monday that Government would want to source the jabs.
However, there are challenges but the Government has initiated a process through its channels to bring the shots here. It is expected that in two months, the shots can be accessed.
“I think this is another group of people that we would like to get vaccinated. Vaccines were not previously available for this age group. Both Pfizer and Moderna would have sought Emergency Use Authorisation from the FDA. The CDC, shortly thereafter, would have authorised its use in the United States,” he underscored in Monday’s COVID update.
According to the World Health Organisation’s (WHO) recent figures, about 542 million confirmed cases were reported globally along with 6.3 deaths.
In the Region of the Americas, the number of confirmed COVID-19 cases are pegged at over 162 million with a death toll of 2.7 million.
