12 Brazilians remanded for illegal entry into Guyana

Twelve Brazilians, who were nabbed by Police along the Rockstone Trail in Region 10 (Upper Demerara-Berbice), were on Tuesday charged for illegal entry into Guyana and were remanded to prison following an appearance before Magistrate Wanda Fortune at the Linden Magistrate’s Court. Those charged were: Elcio Carlos Da Silva, Raimundo Nonato Bastos De Melo, Dionelson Araujo Cardoso, Dionny Da Silva Fèrreira, Lauriane Monteiro, Adriano Lucas. Da Silva Freitas, Mauro Perreira De Sousa, Vandro Taveira Dos Santos, Gilberto, Rodrigues Postilho, Edson Da Silva Dias, Raimundo Neres Santos and Lucinalva Mendes Pereira. They all pleaded not guilty to the charge of illegal entry into Guyana and were remanded to prison. The case will continue on August 19.
The Brazilians were detained by Police in a minibus which was intercepted at the Rockstone Trail in Region 10 on July 30, 2020. Guyana’s borders are currently closed due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Official reports indicate that Police ranks, acting on intelligence, intercepted the minibus at the location at approximately 02:00h on the said date. The 12 accused were then escorted to the Upper Demerara Hospital (UDH) COVID-19 quarantine facility at Wismar, Linden, to undergo COVID-19 testing. The samples which were collected were then sent to Georgetown, and one of the accused tested positive for COVID-19. (G13)
