13-year-old suspect shot after targeting pensioner in midday robbery attempt

An attempted robbery under arms in the heart of Georgetown on Wednesday resulted in a 13-year-old suspect being shot after members of the public intervened to stop the attack.

The incident occurred around 10:15h along Brickdam, in front of the Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception, and involved an 81-year-old pensioner of Robb Street who was accompanied by his 79-year-old brother.
According to preliminary information from police, the two elderly men were on their way to conduct official business when they were approached by two males. One of the suspects, who was armed with a knife, reportedly rode up on a bicycle and attempted to snatch a haversack being carried by the pensioner.
The elderly man raised an alarm, prompting members of the public in the area to intervene. During the commotion, a 25-year-old licensed firearm holder who was nearby discharged his weapon in the direction of the suspects.
One of the suspects, later identified as a 13-year-old boy from Albouystown, Georgetown, was struck and fell to the ground, while the second suspect managed to escape in an unknown direction.
Emergency Medical Technicians were summoned to the scene, and the injured teenager was transported to the Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation, where he remains under medical care for a gunshot wound to his gluteal area.
CCTV cameras in the vicinity have since been identified and are being reviewed as part of the investigation. The firearm used in the incident has also been secured and lodged by authorities pending further inquiries.
Investigations into the attempted robbery and the discharge of the firearm are ongoing.
