14 to compete for Chutney Monarch in Berbice on Saturday

Fourteen chutney artistes will take to the stage on Saturday evening to compete for the title of Guyana Chutney Monarch 2017 but reigning King, Bunty Singh, is expected to regain the coveted title.

The event is set to sing off at 20:00h at the Rose Hall Canje Ground, Berbice. The 14 contestants will clash for supremacy and will definitely showcase their vocals and lyrics.

The line-up includes King Solo, Ameer Baksh, Sheldon Lyken, Vicadi Singh, Shevon Singh, Roger Hinds, Balika Seenaraine, Vanita Willie, Aamir Khan, Steven Raphael, Amanda Heeralall and Dennis Tatpaul, along with NY-based Marissa Deodat.

The singers will be backed by the Shakti Strings Orchestra Band, with its lead keyboardist Avinash Roopchan.

This year the competitors are drawn from Essequibo, Berbice, Georgetown and New York.

Their songs are original compositions and the artistes are all ready to hit the stage on Saturday evening after weeks of rehearsals. Some of the entries this year are focused on relationships and Indian weddings while once rendition is about revival of traditional chutney. One entry also talks about a secret admirer.
