Children are often considered as blessings from God. That notion can be used to describe 15 babies that were welcomed by their mothers on New Year’s Day throughout the country.

Keshanna Pollard, Shanice McPherson and Casindra Dorsett were three of four ecstatic mothers who had safe deliveries at the Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation (GPHC) on January 1, 2020.
The first baby boy was delivered via C-Section; he was followed by a girl, then another boy and another baby girl who were all delivered by natural births.
Dorsett, to whom the first baby girl was born, named her daughter Thalia which according to her means “blessings from above”.
Pollard proudly welcomed a son while McPherson also welcomed a daughter.
Minister of Public Health, Volda Lawrence visited the mothers on Wednesday and expressed satisfaction that the babies and mothers are in perfect conditions. She applauded the hard-working midwives and doctors of the GPHC for their dedication.

“I am very happy, I am proud that these mothers can come here and have safe deliveries feel secure and comfortable…I am very grateful for the fact that as the Minister of Public Health, I have a team here at the Georgetown Public Hospital who take their jobs seriously and you can see the improvement we have had from one year to the next,” the Minister said.
This is followed by the medical team at the Suddie Public Hospital sharing the joy of two mothers who delivered their babies on New Year’s Day.
Nineteen-year-old Angelica Smith of Bush Lot, Region Two (Pomeroon-Supenaam), delivered her second child, a bouncing baby boy at around 03:13h. Meanwhile, 39-year-old Samantha Peters of Dartmouth gave birth to a baby girl whom she was excited to have welcomed on such a significant day.

The Linden Hospital Complex (LHC) in Region 10 (Upper Demerara-Berbice) welcomed its first baby for 2020. The beautiful baby girl, Qahira Azaria Richmond, was born to Lindener Deon Statia Richmond at 03:30h on January 3.
The child and her mother were among those awarded baby-friendly gifts from the charitable “Caring for Others Organisation”, which were handed over by Representative Jermaine Figueira on Friday.
The items handed over included baby care products, clothing, toys and footwear among others. Figueira, in handing over the items to Richmond and others, extended congratulations, noting that the organisation was happy to make the contribution of the new and quality products.
Richmond, who is also mother to two more girls expressed gratitude for the donation. Same was expressed by Maternity Ward Supervisor Charlene Sampson on behalf of the medical institution.
Finally, the New Amsterdam hospital recorded eight New Year’s babies.
The babies are double the amount born on New Year’s Day in 2018. The first was a bouncing baby boy who was delivered to Tarmattie Bainnuth of 59 Village, Corentyne, Berbice, at 02:35h.
Nineteen-year-old Towanna Gravsandy of Bush Lot, West Coast Berbice, followed, as she delivered her first child; a 2.9kg girl at 06:40h. At 08:35h, 38-year-old Diana Gonzalez of Victory Street Cumberland, East Canje, delivered her fifth baby boy.
Nurse Gaitrie Naggah, who is attached to the New Amsterdam Hospital also had the privilege of delivering her first child at 13:15h on the significant day.
The three final mothers of the day were Somwattie Denat, Leeana Thomas of Manchester Village, Corentyne and Anita Kalian of Johns, Port Mourant, both of which delivered bouncing baby girls.
Meanwhile, Medical Superintendent of the New Amsterdam Hospital, Dr Vasana Henry was on hand to deliver hampers to all the mothers.
