150 Region 10 healthcare workers to get ‘young professional’ homes

Some 150 healthcare workers in Region 10 (Upper Demerara-Berbice) will soon benefit from young professional homes constructed by the Housing Ministry.
President Irfaan Ali visited the region on Saturday where he informed that pending applications for doctors, nurses and medical technicians will be soon be processed. A total of 1000 homes are in the construction phase at Plantation York, accelerating Government’s housing initiative.
“We’re now developing Plantation York. I have asked that before the end of this year, those 150-plus who have applied that we must have then pre-qualified and have the bank approve their loans. So, by the first quarter next year, they can move into their young professional homes.
Ali said such initiatives change conditions and circumstances, improve net value and create opportunities for future generations.

“Young people have the best opportunity for a brighter future. Don’t be sidetracked. All of us today have a responsibility of carrying all of Guyana on our shoulders,” he encouraged the young health workers.
Constructed on 500 acres of land, Plantation York will include a residential area as well as commercial and industrial zones. The housing development includes the building out of roads, bridges, drainage and culverts as well as utilities.
Since taking office in 2020, the PPP/C Administration has distributed more than 23,500 house lots to date, and is working aggressively to meet the target of 50,000 by the end of its 5-year tenure in 2025.
The Ministry has been constructing ‘young professional’ homes in several areas across the country. During the Linden Building Expo held in May, Croal announced an investment of approximately $600 million towards constructing 200 core homes in Silica City on the Soesdyke-Linden Highway.
Government has pushed aggressively to develop housing schemes in Onderneeming, Charity, Edinburgh, Cornelia Ida, Meten-Meer-Zorg, Anna Catherina, Stewartville, Great Diamond, Little Diamond, Non Pareil, Enterprise, Hope Cummings Lodge, Lusignan, Good Hope, De Endragt Golden Grove, Le Ressouvenir, La Reconnaissance, Blairmont, Shieldstown, Burma, Fort Ordnance, Number 75 Village, Number 76 Village, Lethem, Amelia’s Ward, among several areas, and excludes areas under the 2023 work programme.
During its term thus far, construction commenced on 2154 houses – and over 1000 have been handed over to new beneficiaries. (G12)
