As part of its ongoing efforts to enforce Guyana’s mining laws, the Natural Resources Ministry brought 16 gold miners before the Bartica and Mahdia Magistrate’s Courts in March on various charges under the Mining Act.
Nine miners were charged with operating without a permit or licence, two with operating unregistered dredges, and five with using licensed dredges on properties without permission. All pleaded guilty and were ordered to pay fines.
The Ministry’s Corps of Wardens uncovered these operations during routine inspections in mining districts. Officials stressed that illegal mining contributes to environmental degradation, threatens public health and safety, and undermines sustainable mining practices.
The Natural Resources Ministry reiterated its commitment to strict enforcement, warning that all breaches of mining laws will be addressed “without fear or favour”. Stakeholders are encouraged to ensure full compliance with regulatory requirements and to work with relevant agencies to maintain legal and responsible mining operations.
