17-year-old with kidney disease among 5 unvaccinated new COVID-19 deaths

Guyana’s COVID-19 death toll has increased to 783 with the deaths of five unvaccinated persons.
The latest fatalities as at Wednesday are two males, aged 17 and 33 years old, both of Region Three (Essequibo Islands-West Demerara); a 28-year-old man of Region Four (Demerara-Mahaica), and a 55-year-old woman of Region 10 (Upper Demerara-Berbice). These all died on September 28. Also, a 66-year-old woman succumbed to the virus on September 29.
The Health Ministry has reported that all of these persons were unvaccinated, and all died while receiving treatment at a medical facility. This newspaper has been able to confirm that the 17-year-old victim had been suffering from a kidney disease.
So far, 158 deaths have been recorded in September 2021, making this the highest number of deaths recorded in a single month since Guyana recorded its first Coronavirus case in last year March.

New cases
The Health Ministry reported on Wednesday that there have been 279 new COVID-19 infections. The cases were recorded over the last 24 hours from a total of 2,090 tests. The total number of confirmed cases in Guyana since March 2020 has now moved to 31,638. So far, 26,762 persons have recovered from the disease.
The Health Ministry has reported that most of the new cases – 169 – have been recorded in Region Four (Demerara-Mahaica). Region Three (Essequibo-Islands-West Demerara) has recorded 52 new cases; Region Two (Pomeroon-Supenaam), has recorded 20 of the new cases; Region Five (Mahaica-Berbice) has recorded four new cases; Region Six (East Berbice-Corentyne) has recorded 10 cases, and Region Seven (Cuyuni-Mazaruni) has recorded five cases.
Six of the new cases were recorded in Region Nine (Upper Takutu-Upper Berbice), while 10 were recorded in Region 10 (Upper Demerara-Berbice).
Presently, there are 31 patients in the COVID-19 Intensive Care Unit; 136 are in institutional isolation; 3,926 are in home isolation, and 11 are in institutional quarantine.
A breakdown of the 31,638 confirmed cases since March 2020 is as follows: Region One – 1478; Region Two – 1138; Region Three – 4163; Region Four – 15,181; Region Five – 1116; Region Six – 2285; Region Seven – 1606; Region Eight – 497; Region Nine – 2356, and Region 10 – 1808.
The Health Ministry is continuing its appeal to persons to observe the protocols of the COVID-19 Emergency Measures which are in effect until today. Among other things, the order emphasises the need for correct and consistent use of a face mask when leaving homes; the importance of maintaining the six feet physical distance from others; and the need for good hand hygiene to help reduce the spread of COVID-19.
