18 months’ jail time for miner nabbed with ganja

A miner was on Friday sentenced to 18 months’ imprisonment and fined $192,000 by Magistrate Crystal Lambert via Skype when he appeared at the Vreed-en-Hoop Magistrate’s Court.

Jamaine Jacobs, 21, of Lot 7 Uitvlugt Estate Road, West Coast Demerara (WCD), pled guilty to the charge, which stated that on September 2, 2020, at 70km Police Checkpoint, he had in his possession 128 grams of marijuana for the purpose of trafficking. The prosecution is contending that on September 2, at about 23:28h, ranks were on patrol duty at the 70km Police Checkpoint when the occupants of a motor pick-up, which was en route to Big Hope Backdam Waini River, Region One (Barima-Waini), were subjected to a search.
The police instructed the occupants to disembark the pick-up with their personal belongings to be searched, but no illegal items were found.
A further search was carried out on the pick-up, and a pair of long grey boots was unearthed. In the right-side boot, a quantity of seeds, leaves, and stems wrapped in transparent plastic were found. The occupants were questioned, and Jacobs admitted ownership of the narcotics. (G1)
